Frequently Provided Answers
  1. I don't live in California, can KRF still provide virtual counsel ?
If you reside outside of California, but have a legal matter that is to be governed by California law and/or will be heard in a Federal or State Court located in California then KRF virtual counsel would be appropriate. If you are unsure which law or jurisdiction will govern your matter then please contact KRF for assistance.

  2. I reside in California but not in the Los Angeles area, does it matter ?
KRF can provide virtual and traditional counsel throughout California. However, if you live outside southern California then traditional counsel may be less flexible. Virtual counsel is the same regardless of where in California (or the world) you reside. Contact KRF to learn the issues involved with receiving traditional counsel outside of southern California.
  3. How do I become a client ?
  4. What are the available payment options ?
The following payment options are available:
    • Check or money order in US dollars drawn on a US bank and sent to the KRF mailing address.
    • Check in British pounds drawn on a British bank and sent to the KRF mailing address.
    • Cash, in US Dollars, Euros and/or British pounds, hand-delivered to KRF (requires appointment in advance).
    • Online payments (credit/debit/ACH) may be made though PayPal (this does not require a PayPal Account).

For Xoom and other bank transfer options, please contact KRF
  5. Will KRF accept a fixed fee arrangement rather than hourly billing for non-virtual counsel ?
Yes. The particulars are client and request dependent though so please contact KRF to discuss your situation and to receive a formal fixed fee offer.
  6. Do I have to pay a retainer if I am only seeking virtual counsel ?
No. The retainer is only paid prior to receiving non-virtual counsel, such as, but not limited to, requesting KRF attend a meeting or hearing. If you only require virtual counsel then the retainer does not have to be paid.
  7. How long does it normally take to perform the limited scope tasks ?
The limited scope tasks generally take one to two weeks, depending on the particular details of the request. In some cases, such as the preparation of pleadings and 501(c)(3) applications, the required time is heavily dependent on the client's provision of necessary information. Note that regardless of the time it takes, only the one-time fixed fee is required.
  8. If I need two or more limited scope tasks that total over $120, which agreement should I choose ?
If your tasks can be completed within one month then choosing the KRF Attorney-Client Agreement is the better choice since you would only need to pay $120. However, if your tasks will take more than a month then paying the limited scope fees would normally be more cost-effective. Please contact KRF for information on the time required to complete your tasks.
  9. Does KRF offer free consultations ?
General assistance to determine whether KRF would be appropriate counsel and what to expect from hiring KRF is freely provided by electronic mail. Otherwise, no other consultations are provided. If you prefer to discuss your matter by telephone, please provide your telephone/Skype information and best times to call.
  10. Are in-person meetings billed by the hour ?
Yes. All appearances, as well as other non-virtual activities, by KRF are billed hourly. Only virtual counsel is covered by fixed fee payments. Furthermore, prior to any meeting or other appearance, a retainer must be paid per the terms and conditions of the attorney client agreement in force.
  11. Does KRF take pro bono cases ?
Not directly. Any pro bono work done by KRF will be handled through third-party agencies that specialize in matching lawyers with pro bono opportunities.
  12. Does KRF take litigation cases on a pure (no fees, no costs) contingency basis ?
Generally no. In certain hardship situations, KRF may take a case with a revised fee, cost and award schedule that is more affordable for the client. Contact KRF to discuss your situation. Please note that KRF is not an experienced trial lawyer.
  13. Does KRF outsource work to other attorneys or paralegals ?
No. Work is not outsourced. All work is done by KRF and/or KRF staff.
  14. I want to encrypt files and messages before transmitting them, how do I do that ?
Encrypt your messages using KRF's public key (listed below). To obtain a free copy of public key encryption software, please visit GnuPG (GNU Privacy Guard) to find a version for your system. (Windows versions are at Gpg4win.) If you would like KRF to transmit messages and files using your public key, please send KRF your public key.
